Self-pay and discretion
Many people choose self-pay because they would rather not involve an insurance company in their therapy. When insurance is used, a practice shares information with the health plan to obtain payment, such as a diagnosis, dates of service, and a treatment summary. We do not send your insurance company information about care you pay for yourself. We share your information outside the practice only with your written permission, with the secure services that help us run the practice, or in the limited situations our Notice of Privacy Practices describes, such as a medical emergency or a legal requirement.
Your record is protected the same way however you pay. Self-pay changes what is shared for payment, not the confidentiality of your care.
