Support for Complicated Family Ties
Therapy for family relationships offers space to address conflict between parents and adult children, siblings, in-laws or members of blended families. Sessions can focus on caregiving strain, shifting roles, boundaries, estrangement or efforts toward repair. You do not have to agree about everything to begin talking about what each person needs.
Understanding the Patterns
Family therapy can explore the patterns that shape how you communicate, respond to conflict and take on responsibilities. A family systems perspective looks at relationships in context, including roles and expectations that may have developed over time. Our article on family conflict offers another starting point for thinking about these dynamics.
Together or On Your Own
We offer family sessions and individual therapy focused on family relationships. Together, the work may involve slowing down recurring arguments, listening to different perspectives and discussing boundaries. On your own, therapy can help you explore your choices and needs, including when another family member is unwilling to participate or contact feels uncertain. If there has been abuse, violence or threats in the family, joint sessions may not be the right place to start, and your clinician can talk with you about what feels safe.
