There are two ways to pay for therapy at Therapy Aligned: through an insurance plan the practice is in-network with, or self-pay, which is also called private-pay. This post describes how each one works. It does not rank them, and it is not advice about which to choose.
People seek self-pay therapy for different reasons. Some do not have insurance. Others have a plan Therapy Aligned is not in-network with.
Using Insurance
Therapy Aligned also accepts several insurance plans.
Paying Self-Pay
Self-pay means paying the practice’s fee directly instead of through an insurance plan. It is for clients who are uninsured or who are not using insurance for these services.
Our standard self-pay rate is $200 per standard 53-minute individual session. Other individual-session lengths are billed in proportion to that rate; couples, family, and group sessions are priced separately. Self-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.
A separate post explains how a self-pay fee differs from a copay.
What Is Shared with a Health Plan
Many people choose self-pay because they would rather not involve an insurance company in their therapy. When insurance is used, a practice shares information with the health plan to obtain payment, such as a diagnosis, dates of service, and a treatment summary. We do not send your insurance company information about care you pay for yourself. We share your information outside the practice only with your written permission, with the secure services that help us run the practice, or in the limited situations our Notice of Privacy Practices describes, such as a medical emergency or a legal requirement.
Your record is protected the same way however you pay. Self-pay changes what is shared for payment, not the confidentiality of your care.
If Your Plan Is Out-of-Network
If Therapy Aligned is not in-network with your plan, you can pay self-pay. Therapy Aligned provides a superbill (an itemized receipt) on request, which you can submit to your own insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement depends on your plan; Therapy Aligned cannot tell you what your plan will pay and does not guarantee reimbursement. Our page on out-of-network therapy in New Jersey has more detail.
If you choose to submit a superbill to your insurer, you are sharing that information with your plan yourself.
What Stays the Same
The clinical care is the same whether you use insurance or self-pay. Virtual sessions are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant video, and Therapy Aligned offers therapy for children, teens, adults, couples, and families in person in Metuchen and virtually across New Jersey.
