Why Does Self-Pay Therapy Cost More Than an Insurance Copay?

A Copay Is a Share of the Cost

A copay is the client’s share of the cost of a covered service.

A Self-Pay Fee Is the Full Fee

A self-pay fee is the full fee for the session. Therapy covers more than the 1-hour session. Depending on the practice and the client’s needs, that may include clinical preparation, documentation, treatment planning, consultation, care coordination, individualized resources, secure technology, administrative support, and the clinician’s professional expertise.

Our page on what self-pay therapy covers describes this in more detail.

The Self-Pay Fee at Therapy Aligned

Our standard self-pay rate is $200 per standard 53-minute individual session. Other individual-session lengths are billed in proportion to that rate; couples, family, and group sessions are priced separately. Self-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.

The Care Is the Same

The difference between a copay and a self-pay fee is a difference in how a session is paid for. The clinical care is the same whether you use insurance or self-pay.
