When the Past Lives in the Present

For many people, the word “trauma” does not quite fit their story — but the weight of a difficult history does. You may not have a single defining event you can point to. Instead, there may be a childhood that asked too much, relationships that left marks, losses that were never fully grieved, or a life that developed around survival rather than thriving.

Trauma does not always arrive as a dramatic moment. Sometimes it is the accumulation of experiences that were too much, too soon, or too alone. The effects show up in the present: in emotional patterns that feel outsized or confusing, in relational dynamics that repeat despite your best efforts, in a nervous system that stays on guard even when the danger has passed, and in the ways you have learned to protect yourself — sometimes at the cost of connection, rest, or openness to life.

Our Approach to Trauma

Therapy Aligned clinicians are trained to work with adults who carry the residue of adverse, overwhelming, or painful experiences. Our approach to trauma therapy centers on understanding how the past lives in the present — and gently expanding what is possible from there.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps you understand the protective parts of yourself that developed in response to difficult experiences — and build a different relationship with them. Psychodynamic therapy explores the patterns, defenses, and relational templates that formed early and continue to shape your life. Attachment-based approaches address the ways that early relational experiences influence how you connect, trust, and feel safe with others today.

These modalities are particularly well-suited to sustained trauma work because they do not just address symptoms. They help you understand the internal architecture that formed around the difficult experience — and they do so at a pace that respects your capacity and your autonomy.

What We Treat

We work with adults living with a range of trauma-related concerns, including complex trauma, PTSD, childhood adversity, attachment wounds, and grief. Many of our clients do not identify as “trauma survivors” in the traditional sense. They may simply recognize that something from their past continues to shape how they feel, relate, and move through the world — and they want to understand it better.

We treat trauma at the outpatient level. This means our work is best suited for clients who are stable enough to engage in weekly therapy and who are looking for sustained, depth-oriented care rather than crisis intervention. If you are transitioning from a higher level of care or have recently completed an intensive program, we can provide the kind of clinical continuity that supports long-term healing.

We do not use EMDR. Our clinicians are trained in depth-oriented modalities — including IFS, psychodynamic therapy, and attachment-based approaches — that are well-suited to the kind of sustained, relational trauma work that unfolds over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is trauma therapy and how does it work?

Trauma therapy helps you process overwhelming experiences that continue to affect your emotions, relationships, and sense of safety. At Therapy Aligned, we use IFS, psychodynamic, attachment-based, and DBT approaches — working at your pace, not on a fixed protocol timeline.

Do you treat complex trauma and PTSD in New Jersey?

Yes. Our clinicians specialize in complex trauma, PTSD, childhood adversity, relational wounds, and grief. We work with the whole picture — not just isolated symptoms.

Do you use EMDR for trauma therapy?

We do not use EMDR. Our depth-oriented modalities — IFS, psychodynamic, and attachment-based therapy — are well-suited to trauma work at the outpatient level and allow for a more relationally grounded process.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Trauma therapy is rarely a quick fix. Some clients work in focused bursts; others engage in longer-term care. Your therapist will collaborate with you on what feels right — there is no pressure to move faster than you are ready for.
