It Was Never Just About the Substance

Addiction counseling at Therapy Aligned is grounded in the understanding that substance use is rarely just about the substance. It is about what the substance was doing — managing anxiety, numbing pain, creating a sense of connection, or providing relief from a mind that never quiets. When you understand addiction through that lens, the path forward changes. It is no longer just about stopping a behavior. It is about understanding what that behavior was protecting you from and building something more sustainable in its place.

If you have been struggling with alcohol, opioids, cannabis, or other substances and the usual advice has not been enough — or if you have been through treatment before and something still feels unresolved — you are not failing at recovery. You may need a different kind of clinical conversation.

Clinical Depth, Not Judgment

Our clinicians hold LCADC (Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor) licensure, which means they have been specifically trained and credentialed to work with substance use disorders at a clinical level. This is not an add-on or a secondary specialization. Addiction counseling is central to what we do, and our clinicians approach it with sophistication and genuine respect for the complexity of recovery.

We understand that addiction does not exist in isolation. It often co-occurs with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relational difficulty. Our clinicians are trained to hold the full picture — not to separate your mental health from your substance use and treat them as if they are unrelated. When both sides of the experience are understood together, the clinical work becomes more honest, more effective, and more humane.

What We Treat

We work with adults navigating alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, cannabis dependence, and other substance use challenges in an outpatient, telehealth setting. Our work is well-suited for people who are stable enough for weekly therapy and who want sustained clinical support — whether you are early in recovery, maintaining long-term sobriety, or still figuring out what your relationship with substances looks like.

We also work with clients who are stepping down from intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), or residential treatment. The transition from structured care to outpatient therapy is one of the most vulnerable moments in recovery, and having a clinician who understands both the addiction and the mental health dimensions of your experience can make a meaningful difference.

Our Approach

We incorporate relapse prevention planning, motivational approaches, and evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). These approaches work together to address the behavioral patterns, the emotional regulation challenges, and the underlying pain that substance use was managing.

CBT and DBT provide concrete skills for identifying triggers, managing cravings, and tolerating distress without turning to substances. ACT helps you build a life organized around your values rather than around avoidance. IFS offers a way to understand the parts of you that turned to substances — not with shame, but with curiosity — and to develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself in recovery.

Our clinicians hold LCADC licensure (Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor) — a clinical credential specific to the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders in New Jersey. This means you are working with someone whose training in addiction is specialized, not incidental.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does addiction counseling involve?

Addiction counseling at Therapy Aligned integrates evidence-based psychotherapy with substance use treatment. We address the underlying mental health conditions — anxiety, depression, trauma — alongside the addiction itself, rather than treating them separately.

Do you treat alcohol and opioid addiction in New Jersey?

Yes. Our LCADC-licensed clinicians work with alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, and other substance use disorders. We provide outpatient-level care including relapse prevention and recovery planning.

Can I start addiction counseling after leaving rehab or IOP?

Absolutely. We specialize in step-down care for clients transitioning from IOP, PHP, or residential treatment. Continuity of care during this transition is critical, and we can begin quickly.

Do you accept insurance for addiction counseling?

Yes. We are in-network with Horizon BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare/Optum, Oscar, and Medicare. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan.
